5 1And seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he had sat down, his disciples came to
him. 2Then he opened his mouth and taught them, saying,
3"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4"Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.
5"Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.
6"Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.
7"Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.
8"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
9"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
10"Blessed are those who have been persecuted for righteousness' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of
heaven.
11"Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil words
against you, for my sake. 12Rejoice and celebrate, for your reward in heaven is great, for that is how they
persecuted the prophets who were before you.
13"You are the salt of the earth. And if the salt loses its taste, with what shall it be salted? It no longer has
any purpose, except to be thrown out and trampled by people.
14"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15People do not light a lamp and
put it under a measuring-basket, but on a lamp-stand; and it shines upon everyone in the house. 16So let
your light shine before people so that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in
heaven.
17"Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.
18For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one small letter or pen-stroke shall in any way
pass away from the Law until it all has been fulfilled. 19So whoever shall break one of the least of these
commandments, and teach others to do so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven. But whoever shall
do and teach them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20For I tell you that unless your
righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, in no way shall you enter into the kingdom of
heaven.
21"You have heard that it was said to those who lived long ago, 'Do not commit murder,' and 'Whoever
murders is in danger of the judgment.' 22But I tell you that everyone who is unfairly angry with his brother
is in danger of the judgment; whoever shall say to his brother, 'You good-for-nothing!' risks the judgment
from
the council-court; whoever shall say, 'You fool!' is in danger of the fire of hell.
23"So if you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has something against
you, 24leave your gift there before the altar, and go; first be reconciled to your brother, and then come and
offer your gift. 25Agree with your opponent quickly, while you are with him in the pathway; otherwise the
opponent may deliver you to the judge, and the judge deliver you to the officer, and you will be thrown into
prison. 26Truly I tell you, you shall by no means come out of there, until you pay the last small coin.
27"You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery,' 28but I tell you that everyone who gazes at a
woman to lust after her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. 29And if your right eye causes
you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it away from you. For if one of your body-parts should perish, that is
better for you than having your whole body thrown into hell. 30And if your right hand causes you to
stumble, cut it off, and throw it away from you. For if one of your body-parts should perish, that is better
for you than having your whole body go into hell.
31"It was also said, 'Whoever shall release his wife from wedlock, let him give her a certificate of divorce,'
32but I tell you that whoever shall release his wife from wedlock, except due to sexual immorality, causes her
to commit adultery, and whoever marries her who has been released from wedlock commits adultery.
33"Again, you have heard that it was said to those who lived long ago, 'Do not make false vows, but
perform your vows to the Lord.' 34But I tell you, do not swear at all: not by heaven, for it is the throne of
God; 35nor by the earth, for it is the footstool of his feet; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great king.
36Nor shall you swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black. 37Let your word 'Yes' be
'Yes' and let your 'No' be 'No.' Whatever is more than these is from the evil one.
38"You have heard that it was said, 'Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.' 39But I tell you, do not oppose the
wicked; but whoever strikes you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40And if anyone plans to
sue you to take your coat, surrender your shirt to him also. 41And whoever compels you to go one mile, go
with him two. 42Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow
from you.
43"You have heard that it was said, 'Love your neighbor,' and hate your enemy. 44But I tell you, love
your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat
you and persecute you, 45that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven. For he causes his sun to
rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the just and the unjust. 46For if you love those who love
you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax-collectors do the same thing? 47And if you greet only
your brothers, is that so unusual? Do not even the Gentiles do likewise? 48You, therefore, be complete, as
your heavenly Father is complete."
